about

This EP consists of four tracks, each of which unfolds in a space between techno and ambient music. The music is the result of a recent change in Marsmachine’s setup and workflow. Not long ago, he began exploring the possibilities of composing with a setup that doesn’t rely on a computer, and that has produced some rather different, although interesting pieces of music. Being so used to working with a computer as an important part of the creative process, this is quite a transformation for Marsmachine. That’s also why the release of ‘The Rest’ is so special for him, as it marks this change of workflow and style.

The EP has, according to the young producer, “the best of both worlds”. It’s a mix of his original sound, and a newer sound that is much more influenced by ambient music. As an example, the inspiration from ambient music is very clear on the last track, ‘Paa Gensyn’, and a track like ‘Strond’ is the perfect mix of both ambient music and techno.

Furthermore, this EP is a follow-up on Marsmachine’s debut-EP that relied on the theme “nothing”. When he worked on that EP, he constantly felt the need to compose music based on certain themes, emotions, experiences etc., like many other musicians do, otherwise the music would be “nothing”.

This time, there are no pre-defined themes nor stories. Just sounds. That also leaves space for the listeners to interpret the music themselves, and that is exactly the whole point of Marsmachine’s music in general, he recently realized.

“It has been difficult to admit that I simply can’t tell my own stories through my music. But now I see the opportunities instead, especially the possibility of letting the listener decide the song’s narrative. We’re all so easily influenced by the things we read or hear about a piece of art before even seeing/hearing it. Why not let the audience tell the stories at first?”
To wrap up: It’s all about the music! Now, “the rest” is up to the listener.
